Former inspector begins jail term soon for bribes related to asbestos abatement

September 29th, 2010 - A former city inspector in Chicago will begin a one-year jail term starting next month for accepting bribes related to improper asbestos disposal, according to Fox news affiliate WFLD-TV in Chicago.

Michael Cease pled guilty to soliciting bribes and falsifying documents indicating a company had properly disposed of asbestos on an abatement job when it hadn't. Following his jail term, Cease will begin two years of supervised probation. Cease will report to prison on Oct. 25, the news station reported.

He initially solicited a $600 bribe in exchange for falsisying the abatement report, then demanded an additional $550 from the building owner where the abatement occurred. When the Chicago Inspector General's office partnered with the FBI to investigate Cease, he was caught taking a bribe during an audio and video surveillance operation. He entered a guilty plea in May.

Asbestos abatement requires that the removal, handling and disposal of the hazardous mineral take place under strict state and federal guidelines. Asbestos exposure has been linked to diseases including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis, and is the focus of many asbestos settlements and mesothelioma lawsuits that have been filed in recent years.
